Beyond Fashion, The Michel Haddi Collection, Londres, Royaume-Uni.

Michel Haddi: Beyond Fashion marked the first major solo exhibition in Milan dedicated to the Franco-Algerian photographer. Presented in two chapters, the exhibition brought together a selection of iconic images spanning more than four decades of Haddi’s career, revealing the breadth of a practice that has shaped the visual language of fashion and portrait photography since the 1980s.

The exhibition featured portraits of some of the most influential cultural figures of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, including David Bowie, Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz, and Liza Minnelli. Moving beyond the conventions of fashion imagery, the photographs highlighted Haddi’s ability to capture both the public aura and the intimate presence of his subjects.

Through a dialogue between studio portraits, editorial commissions, and more spontaneous images, Beyond Fashionoffered a comprehensive overview of Haddi’s distinctive visual universe. The exhibition emphasized the cinematic atmosphere, sensuality, and psychological depth that characterize his work, reaffirming his position as one of the leading figures in contemporary fashion photography.

Presented at the Saatchi Gallery in London, Beyond Fashion explored the evolution of fashion photography from a commercial medium into a fully recognized artistic practice. Bringing together works by nearly fifty internationally acclaimed photographers, the exhibition examined how fashion imagery has expanded beyond the presentation of clothing to engage with identity, imagination, culture, and social change.

Michel Haddi's photographs were featured alongside works by major figures including Peter Lindbergh, Nick Knight, Paolo Roversi, Viviane Sassen, and Ellen von Unwerth. Organized around the themes of Allure, Fantasy, Realism, and Surrealism, the exhibition highlighted the diversity of approaches that have transformed fashion photography into one of the defining visual languages of contemporary culture.

Within this broader historical narrative, Haddi’s work stood out for its unique combination of elegance, spontaneity, and emotional intensity. His portraits and fashion images demonstrated how photography can simultaneously document an era and reveal the individuality of its subjects, reflecting the enduring influence of his vision on the field.
